The best supplements for brain fog are proven to help with brain health and memory.

I have personal experience with brain fog. In fact, I would even call it a relationship. After I went through chemotherapy, I had what they call ‘chemo brain’. Then, you may have read here that I had hyperparathyroidism. Well, that really affects the brain as the excess calcium in the blood makes the brain connections not work as well. That is now fixed.

There is a myriad of reasons why you might develop brain fog. It could be hormone imbalances, nutrient deficiencies, depression and anxiety, medications you are taking, or other health issues.

Brain fog is that feeling like when you’re sick and have a hard time thinking. You literally feel like you’re walking around in a fog. You can think, but it’s not clear. And it’s hard to remember things, your memory is affected.

But you don’t have to settle for brain fog. Don’t give up! I am going to share the best supplements for brain fog that I have found Really sharpen up your brain.

You’ll get the best benefits if you try them for at least a month. But you might see immediate results. Sometimes, especially when we are deficient in a nutrient, it takes a bit to allow the body to replenish and then see the benefits of having enough.

This is what brain fog feels like.

If you’re experiencing brain fog, I highly recommend visiting your physician to see if there is a medical reason why you’re feeling foggy.

But no matter what, I have found these supplements have been instrumental in improving my memory and thinking. And it’s all based on the research I’ve done and shared with you, dear reader.

Alpha GPC (Choline)

Choline is a natural substance and is the precursor to acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter in our nervous systems. Lack of enough acetylcholine in the nervous system really affects your memory, memory retention and spatial cognition.

But when you take a choline supplement, it will really rev up your brain in a good way. It’s very noticeable how much clearer my thinking is during the day. You can read my article: Does Choline Help Prevent Dementia and Alzheimer’s? for more information. Choline is a must to help get rid of brain fog.

Taurine

Taurine, also known as l-Taurine, is a sulfur amino acid, one of the building blocks of protein. It’s actually a brain builder and gives you extra baseline energy. Taurine is critical for the brain development of fetuses and newborns. But it’s also great at any age. We can make taurine in our bodies, but as we age, we make less.

I started taking taurine about a month ago and I’m continuing to feel even more clear-headed all the time. Not only that, it seems to be helping my outlook a lot! I feel a lot happier and more out-going. And the energy it gives me! Wow. I really have a lot more energy to get through the day. I highly recommend trying taurine. It also has anti-aging and anti-inflammatory properties. inflammation is a big cause of brain fog and also many diseases prevalent today. Here is a link to my article on taurine for more info: Taurine and the Brain.

Omega 3 Fatty Acids

the best supplements for brain fogI’m sure you’ve heard about Omega 3s being good for the heart. They are. They are also amazing for the brain. And anything that’s good for the heart is also good for the brain. They are one of the good fats.

DHA and EPA are especially good for the brain. DHA is a building block for the brain. But it is hard to get enough with diet alone so taking a supplement, making sure it has DHA in it, is extremely important for getting rid of brain fog. You can read my article on DHA for the Brain here.

MCT Oil

medium-chain triglycerides. Brain food. These are some of the good fats. Our brains are made mostly of lipids so adding good fats is a no-brainer. Coconut oil is an excellent MCT Oil. Combine this with the low-carb diet and you won’t believe how much better you feel and how much better your brain works. Just so you know, gluten (in wheat, barley, and rye) can cause inflammation and is a huge cause of brain fog.

The best diet for the brain is shown to be a no gluten, low-carb diet which includes more of the good fats: MCT Oil, ghee, and Omega 3s. Believe it or not, you’ll not only find your brain works better but you might lose a few of those extra pounds you’ve been trying to get rid of. Even the stubborn gut! I also found my LDL cholesterol went down by a lot. Much more than when I was trying to go mostly fat-free (when I was following mainstream common thought).

I have a review of Bulletproof’s Brain Octane Oil if you’d like to check it out. I highly recommend Bulletproof coffee and MCT Oils.

Probiotics

Probiotics help keep the gut healthy and in check. We have natural bacteria that help digest food and get nutrients from what we eat. When the gut is out of balance, this can really affect your brain. In fact, the gut is sometimes called the ‘second brain’ because the gut and brain are connected by a very large nerve, the vagus nerve. The gut can even create it’s own neurotransmitters. We know how having gut problems affects our moods but it also affects our memory and brain function.

Probiotics are shown to help with depression and help normalize Cortisol, our stress hormone. You might want to read my article about the Gut and Brain Connection. Incorporate probiotics into your supplement regimen and you’ll feel a whole lot better all around.

Turmeric and Curcumin

Curcumin is the effective part of turmeric, a spice found in dill pickles and Indian curry dishes. It’s an antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and even helps clear amyloid plaques, a nasty buildup of proteins in the brain which is one of the causes and is part of Alzheimer’s.

This must be a part of your plan if you are fighting brain fog. It’s great for your health in general, too! I have an article about Turmeric and Brain Health I encourage you to check out.

Magnesium

Magnesium is amazing for clearing up brain fog. Most people are low on magnesium and this can cause headaches, brain fog, heart problems, aches and pains, depression, constipation, and the list goes on and on. It’s really critical for our health in general but it is an important neuroprotectant. It’s been found that brains with Alzheimer’s have depleted magnesium levels. I have an article about the Side Effects of Low Magnesium you might want to read.
