Turmeric Curcumin was one of the first supplements I wrote about here. Turmeric Curcumin with Bioperene is a great basic supplement that’s great for your brain! It’s really a spice that’s used in curry and dill pickles! And a completely natural bioactive compound from the root of the turmeric plant with medicinal properties. It has been used in India for thousands of years as a spice and medicinal herb, according to Kris Gunnars of Healthline (2018).
Curcumin is just the active part of turmeric that gives us the anti-inflammatory and antioxidant benefits. Bioperene is just a branded name for black pepper. Pepper increases the absorption rate of curcumin (and other nutrients too).
I’ve been taking Puritan’s Pride Turmeric Curcumin with Bioperine for years. I just haven’t found one that’s better or a better bang for my buck. I’ll get into Puritan’s Pride’s Turmeric Curcumin with Bioperine in a minute but let’s briefly go over the benefits of turmeric and curcumin first.
Curcumin Is an Anti-Inflammatory
As you probably know, inflammation is a key player in many chronic diseases, including brain diseases. Scientists believe that low-level inflammation is involved in almost every chronic, Western disease like heart disease, cancer, metabolic syndrome, Alzheimer’s, diabetes. and others. Curcumin is actually as effective as some anti-inflammatory drugs, without the side effects (Gunnars, 2018).
Curcumin blocks the molecule NF-kB which enters cell nuclei and turns on genes that control inflammation. So curcumin fights inflammation at the molecular level.
Antioxidant Properties
Curcumin can neutralize free radicals, the rogue cells that are looking for another cell to complete it. This can cause cancer and other diseases and even premature aging. And curcumin helps stimulate your body’s own natural antioxidant defenses.
It contains flavonoids, natural plant-based antioxidants.
Increases Brain-Derived Neurotophic Factor (BDNF)
Curcumin boosts levels of BDNF, which boosts the growth of new neurons and increases brain function. Lowered BDNF is linked to neurodegenerative diseases like dementia and Alzheimer’s disease (AD).
